NOTE: The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06 . The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05 to GS-06 . The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidateÂ's education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

The Medical Support Assistant provides administrative support to physicians, physicianÂ's assista! nts, nurses, registered nurse practitioners, dietitians, social workers and other administrative and professional staff throughout the assigned work area and the medical center.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, duty hours to be between 7:00 am to 4:30 p.m. to be determined by the Service Chief.

Relocation expenses are not approved for this vacancy. Work schedule subject to change in order to meet the needs of the Veteran's.

It is expected that MSAs receive guidance from more experience! d staff members for more difficult tasks and require frequent and direct contact from the assigned lead and/or supervisor. Assignments at this level include but are not limited to: interacting with both internal and external customers; establishing and maintaining medical outpatient and inpatient charts as well as administrative records; verifying third party insurance and updating information in the Insurance Capture Buffer (ICB) system; obtaining medical information from patients; coordinating information and actions related to patient care and services; and scheduling appointments in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines. The MSA refers all questions requiring immediate medical attention to appropriate health care team member.

At this level, the MSA performs a full range of duties to include those listed above. The MSA is responsible for scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national sch! eduling guidelines. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patientÂ's appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility; ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage (i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, etc.).

GRADE DETERMIN! ATIONS: Your salary and grade will be determined by the Professional Standards Board (PSB). The PSB is a peer review process. The PSB will review your individual qualifications, education, professional training/internship(s) and professional experience to determine the most appropriate salary and grade based on your individual accomplishments.

GS-05:
a. One (1) year of experience in clerical or office work that is directly related to duties of a Medical Support Assistant. Experience at this level includes scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both the In-patient and Out-patient appointments for areas of responsibilities; ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and Insurance information; processing all emergency and non-emerge! ncy transfers to other facilities; performing basic eligibility; co-pays and pre-authorization requirements for specific coverage (Please document related experience within your description of duties.) OR

b. Four (4) years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal pre-requisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week of approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES. In addition to meeting the basic and grade requirements the candiate must demons! trate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to qualify for thi! s position. Please include within you description of duties.

a. Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports.

b. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

c. Ability to make appointments in a clinic setting.

d. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work.

e. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the task to resolve the issue and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

f. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally.

g. Some locations require a valid driver's license.
