The Department of Corrections is currently recruiting for a Mental Health Clinician II to join the team at Palmer Correctional Center, located in the Mat-Su Bor! ough.
The Mental Health Clinician II incumbent performs the duties as described below and operates at a higher level of independence, and in the absence of the Mental Health Clinician III may be responsible for oversight of services at Palmer Correctional Center.

This position provides direct mental health services to inmates at Palmer Correctional Center.

Under general supervision the incumbent will:
Screen & triage inmates presenting with a wide variety of diagnoses including severe mental illness, behavior problems, organic disorders, alcohol/drug abuse, developmental disabilities and personality disorders;
Conduct mental status exams and diagnostic assessments for inmates housed at PCC;
Provide individual counseling and treatment planning for inmates on the mental health caseload;
Provide suicide assessments and develop safety plans for inmates as needed;
Make referrals to and assist the psychiatric provider with telemedi! cine clinics;
Develop detailed release plans for inmates w! ith severe & persisting mental illness;
Facilitate open population core curriculum that will ensure group programming aimed at the adjustment and rehabilitation of inmates;
Provide annual suicide prevention training for institutional staff. We are looking for an employee with the following desired strengths:

Experience working with chronically mentally ill adults;
Ability to work closely with medical and security staff;
Ability to work independently;
Ability to work well with difficult, resistant, and acting-out clients;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
Ability to establish effective rapport with clients;
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor;
Ability to effectively communicate with a diagnostically diverse client base;

Mini! mum Qualifications:
Mental Health Clinician II
A master's degree from an accredited college in psychology, social work, child guidance, nursing, vocational rehabilitation, or a closely related field and two years of professional experience performing psychotherapeutic casework. The experience requirement is met by service as a Mental Health Clinician I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution: Graduate study beyond the master’s degree will substitute for up to one year of the required experience (2 semester hours or 3 quarter hours of graduate study equals one month of work experience.)
