The purpose of this position is to provide direct customer-owner care to clients and their families assisting the providers in the clinic in furnishing high quality health care. The function of the LPN is to organize and accurately complete a wide variety of complex clinical, technical and computer tasks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Customer Care & Relationships: Creates, develops, and nurtures culturally appropriate interactions and connections with each other, customer-owners, and the community. Provides standard nursing care for customer-owners throughout the age continuum involving all body systems and processes. Promotes health outcomes in concert with currently accepted clinical practice guidelines. Some of the duties include but are not limited to: accurate recording of vital signs, performing phlebotomy, specimen collection, recording of EKG’s, dressing changes, medication administration, scheduling customer-owner appointments and procedures, and documenting of care in health record. Assists with customer-owner monitoring during procedures, recognizing emergencies and customer-owner safety issues, and applying appropriate interventions as required. Assists provider staff in providing customer-owner care through treatments, procedures and education. Performs routine IV therapy including insertion, maintenance and discontinuing of peripheral sites and management of existing peripheral sites with premixed ‘piggyback’ medications. Adheres to applicable laws such as client confidentiality, Americans with Disabilities Act, Workers’ Compensation, abuse reporting, principles of consent, and advanced medical directives. Provides a safe customer-owner care environment through the timely reporting of changes or occurrences in the customer-owner’s physical or psychological status, as well as environmental and equipment factors and takes appropriate corrective action. Ensures the smooth flow of the customer-owner through the encounter. Provides maintenance for, and set up, a wide variety of medical equipment. Assists the members of the health care team, the customer-owner, and the family to identify, implement, and follow-up plans for continuing care. Respects the autonomy, dignity, privacy and the rights of the individual. Services will be guided by ethical principles. Provides customer-owner support coordination. Facilitates the smooth flow of the department by assisting provider and other nursing staff. Assists with keeping the customer-owner care environment clean, safe and organized. Available to carry out orders in a timely and efficient manner. Works with clinic staff to make referrals to the appropriate departments per established guidelines. Ensures the availability of supplies and equipment used by the department staff completing daily inventories of various medical items. Completes inventory of stock drug supplies and intravenous fluids and submits re-supply requests. Completes daily quality control testing and documentation of blood glucose meters. Maintains in orderly fashion records of emergency equipment inspections, biomedical repairs and requests for maintenance of unit facilities. Utilizes the customer-owner database to enter and retrieve necessary information. Communications & Teamwork: Shares and receives information, opinions, concerns, and feedback in a supportive manner. Works collaboratively by building bridges, and creating rapport with team members within departments and across the organization. Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Improvement & Innovation: Makes meaningful improvement to services, program, and processes and/or organizational effectiveness that creates new value for customer-owners and employees. Participates in customer-owner and staff education. Participates in the development and implementation of customer-owner care and teaching plans. Participates in unit staff meetings, in-service training activities and quality improvement activities. Provides age appropriate instruction and anticipatory guidance to customer-owners. Assesses educational needs of individual customer-owners and their families and provides needed education in accordance with established clinic guidelines. Emphasizes care instructions stressing the maintenance of health and disease prevention. Workforce Development Skills & Abilities: Seeks out additional learning opportunities to continue to develop the technical and professional skills needed now and in the future. Takes responsibility for all work activities and personal actions by following through on commitments. Demonstrated competency to perform each delegated responsibility, based on individual assessments. Knowledge and skill sufficient to respond to emergency situations such as cardiopulmonary arrest. Knowledge of a wide variety of interrelated or nonstandard assignments reflected in licensure as a practical nurse and broad work experience that demonstrates skill sufficient to resolve a range of problems with responsibility for carrying assignments to completion in providing care to a selected customer-owner load. Knowledge of the human body structure and function, sufficient to recognize illness, diseases, and emotional and physical reaction to care for the purpose of reporting and recording. Knowledge of clinic/department procedures for assembling customer-owner charts, recording provider’s orders, integrating x-ray ad test reports, graphing and charting medical data. Demonstrate ability to provide accurate documentation in the customer-owner health record. Demonstrate ability to learn the computer system, applying the knowledge to accurately schedule customer-owner appointments and test. Demonstrate ability to accurately record vital signs, perform phlebotomy, specimen collection and record EKG’s. Demonstrate ability to assist with customer-owner monitoring during and post-procedure, applying knowledge of safety principles, recognition of emergencies and provision of appropriate interventions. Demonstrate ability to set up and maintain a wide variety of medical equipment and monitoring devices. Must be able to interpret these devices including deviations from normal values. Demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to culturally diverse customs and traditions impacting health care of customer-owner and family. Knowledge of 1974 Privacy Act is required as use of customer-owner record is an integral part of the position and privacy of individuals must be protected to the fullest. Ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards. Additional Responsibilities for Licensed Practical Nurse II: Meets all requirements of Licensed Practical Nurse I in addition to the following: Communications & Teamwork: Supports clinical team through active participation, refinement of best practice models, sharing educational materials with team members. Supports and participates as an active member of the core clinical team. Verbalizes and applies advanced access principles. Serves as a resource for other staff, participates as educator in the medication review class or tutors new department staff. Mentors and orients new staff members. Serves as a clinical leader. Knowledge and ability to communicate best practices in the clinical setting. Demonstrated ability to communicate advanced access principles. Improvement & Innovation: Demonstrated ability and knowledge of quality improvement principles and tools.

QUALIFICATIONS:
SCF programs are established for the purpose of serving a primary population comprised of Alaska Natives who are affiliated with the Cook Inlet Region Inc. (CIRI), and Alaska Natives and American Indians within SCF’s geographical service area. Employees should have a thorough understanding of the cultures and the needs of the CIRI members, and of the general culture and needs of Alaska Natives and American Indians. High school diploma or GED. Alaska licensure as Licensed Practical Nurse. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
