The Institute of Arctic Biology is seeking applicants for a Prevention Research and Clinical Director at the Center fo! r Alaska Native Health and Research.

The Prevention Research and Clinical Director will be vital in the continuation and expansion of a Prevention Trial program designed to increase reasons for life and well being among Yup'ik youth and their families in southwest Alaska. This position oversees (under the direction of PI) and fulfills the aims of an NIH award for the Elluam Tungiinun (Towards Wellness) Research Prevention Trial Project and a State of Alaska capital funding request made to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation to fund an expansion of the Elluan Tungiinun Project (award title: Qungasvik Projects) through a contract to UAF.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.

Knowledge of community prevention and interventions specifically aimed at the reduction of substance abuse and suicide among Alaska Native peoples.

Knowledge of intervention research methods and analytic procedures in behavioral health and inter! vention outcome research in rural indigenous settings in Alask! a.

Ability to provide training in the intervention model process to rural community based staff, and to monitor and ensure fidelity to the indigenous intervention model.

Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with local tribal leadership, and with local and regional health and behavioral health staff.
Experience and ability to supervise, and to supervise the supervision of others.

Must have experience developing models, approaches and tools for use by other research and clinical professionals.

Must have ability to use computerized tools to collect, organize, and analyze information, and to communicate findings.

Must have ability to assess for and make appropriate behavioral health referral of at-risk youth and families.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and cross-cultural skills.

Experience in diagnosis of psycho-social problems and crisis intervention.

Ability to! coordinate and collaborate.

Experience conducting research among minority and rural communities.

Knowledge of human subjects issues in cross cultural research.

Typical education or training required for this position (including licenses).

Masters degree in psychology, public health, sociology, social work, counseling, anthropology, education, psychiatric nursing, or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Length of time and type of experience required for this position.

Minimum of four years research experience in a behavioral health field.

Minimum of two years clinical experience working with diverse client populations and youth.

Minimum four years experience working with Alaska Native peoples and within Alaska Native communities on issues related to health and well-being.

Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities for this position.

Prefer candidates with a! PhD in clincial and/or community psychology.

Prefer candidate! s with experience working/living in remote Alaskan communities.

Preference will be given to candidates with research experience, including data collection and statistical analysis.

Licensed, or working towards licensure as a mental health professional is preferred.

Duty:
Travel to five intervention research communities located in rural southwest Alaska to provide supervision on intervention implementation for local prevention staff, conduct prevention activities, assist with data collection and research documentation and gather evidence to establish outcomes of the intervention

Supervision of data management and integrity functions including data collection, data entry, fidelity and verification on NIH projects. Collaborates with the project investigators on analyses. This involves collaboration with faculty and staff in the CANHR cores. Manages logistics for baseline and intermdiate assessments at each site.

Leads prevention research dissemination process that involves the development of community-based prevention manuals, training manuals, digital and interactive online resources tailored to Alaska Native community and cultural contexts and health edication materials specifically for a ! Alaska Native, Yup'ik population.

Coordinates with project PIs and Co-Is to make decisions on issues related to prevention program fidelity and outcomes assessment.

Coordinates and takes lead in a weekly prevention research team meeting.

Provides training and mentorship for local prevention staff in areas related to mental health and prevention service, substance abuse and suicide.

Responsible for crisis management of clinical emergencies including assessment, intervention, referral and follow-up.

Liaisons with project partners at the local level with Tribal Councils and regional level with the Alaska Native health and social services corporations and agencies and with the local schools and school district.

Assists with preparation of manuscripts for publication, reports to funding agencies and with professional presentations.

Assists with an NSF-funded, international collaborative project focusing on indigenous! arctic youth resilience in Alaska and Siberia.

Develops indep! endent research projects to expand a program of research based on preventing substance abuse and suicide by building indigenous youth and community resilience.
