The Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Behavioral Health is recruiting for an On-Call Psychiatric Nursing Assistant I position.

API operates as A! laska's only state-owned, 24-hour, 7-day a week mental health facility that provides:
Acute, short-term in-patient psychiatric care for patients whose needs are so great or complex that an appropriate level of care cannot be provided in their home town or community, and
Medium security Forensic Inpatient Services Under close supervision, this Psychiatric Nursing Assistant I will work as a nonpermanent employee.

The successful candidate will perform a variety of routine paraprofessional Psychiatric Nursing duties to assist in the care and treatment of mental health patients.

These duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining the security and safety of patients and staff and assisting in therapeutic services.

The person hired will work on an as-needed basis working Day, Evening, or Night Shifts including weekends to fill in for Permanent Staff absences.
You must also be able to complete three (3) weeks of orientation training, Monday through Friday 7:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. for th! ree weeks.
This recruitment may be used to fill more than one (1) vacancy.

Most Important duties of this position:
De-escalate unpredictable, dangerous, or violent behavior.
Intervene non-verbally, verbally, or physically with patients who may cause harm to themselves or others.
Assist patients in occupational and recreational therapy.
Assist patients in accomplishing their activity of daily living skills (ADL).
Interact and engage with chronically, mentally ill patients in group settings and individually.
Observe and document patient behavior accurately.
Recognize potential hazards to keep a safe and therapeutic environment.
Make frequent rounds to check patients locations and safety.
Escorting patients to locations within and outside the hospital.
Obtain and record vital life signs.
Learn and utilize routine technical diagnostic and treatment skills.
Understand the importance of the unit milieu and explai! n unit programs to patients. Desired Strengths for this position:

Must be able to communicate information courteously, accurately, and effectively.
Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of the work and have the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of personalities.
Ability to establish and maintain accurate and complete medical records.
Must be able to work effectively under pressure and continual interruption, reorganizing priorities in a dynamic, frequently changing work environment.
Must be able to apply discretion in handling confidential information and situations.
Ability to exercise a high degree of tact, discretion, and sound judgment in the performance of the work.
Ability to work with the mentally ill or developmentally disabled persons.
Ability to work independently and with good judgment, and the ability t! o work as a team member.
Must be able to read, comprehend, and appl! y written materials/procedures, follow oral and written instructions, and apply them to specific situations, give clear oral and written instructions.
Must be able to work various shifts including nights and weekends. This position is subject to the successful completion of a criminal background Check.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or the equivalent.
AND
Eighteen years of age.
