The Public Health Nurse III (PHN III) position functions as an expert itinerant generalist public health nurse. This position provides a full range of public health nursing services to villages in the Southwest Region of Alaska. This Public Health Nurse III position is based in Bethel, and works under the general direction and supervision of a Public Health Nurse Manager. The communities of Southwest Alaska are a wealth of cultural diversity, with people from all over the world working in partnership with traditional Yupik Eskimo people who have lived in the area for thousands of years. This is an exciting opportunity to provide state-of-the-art, evidence- , and population-based comprehensive public health nursing services to rural Alaskan communities.
This person is responsible for planning, managing and carrying out public health nursing services for individuals, families and groups ! in communities located in the Bethel service area. The individ! ual in this position may travel up to two (2) to three (3) weeks per month, to provide itinerant public health nursing services. Transportation will be primarily by small plane.
Distinguishing Characteristics of the Public Health Nurse: Public health nursing services are aimed at the promotion of healthy families and communities as well as prevention of disease. Emphasis is on infectious disease prevention and control, health promotion activities, maternal-child health, community assessment, and coalition-building around public health issues, and public health emergency preparedness. As a primary public health representative for the community, you serve as a liaison between the State Division of Public Health and local community groups. A sound knowledge of the philosophy, principles, and practice of public health and population-based nursing is required. This public health nurse focuses on population-based practice which includes intervening with communitie! s, the systems that impact the health of communities, and the individuals and families that comprise communities. This population-based practice reflects the priorities of each community. These priorities are determined through an assessment of the populations' health status and a prioritization process. The public health nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates public health nursing interventions, programs, and projects based on the ANA Scope and Standards of Public Health Nursing Practice.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university OR Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university;
AND
A license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska, or eligible to receive a license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska.
AND
Two years of professional public health nursing experience in a public health organization (triba! l, county, city, or state), one year of which was a Public Health Nurse! II or Nurse Consultant I for the State of Alaska, or equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
A Masterâs degree in Nursing or Public Health from an accredited college or university, in addition to the basic educational requirement (Bachelorâs degree in Nursing OR Direct-Entry Master of Science in Nursing), may be substituted for a maximum of one year of public health nursing experience.
Special Note:
Candidates not currently licensed in Alaska may apply. A candidate applying under this option may receive a conditional job offer and may begin work after obtaining the required license.
Experience in international health, occupational health nursing, or school health nursing may be substituted for a maximum of six months of required public health nursing experience. Credit will be pro-rated on the basis of three months of experience to one month of public health nursing experience. This experience must include identification and! assessment of physical and/or emotional problems, referral of any problems requiring further care, and the follow-up of the care provided and assessment to determine the health status and priority needs of a population.
Additional Required Information:
At the time of the interview the following items will be required:
1. A copy of your current Registered Nurse license.
2. Three (3) professional references with current contact information.
3. Current Resume.
4. Three (3) professional writing samples.
At the time of employment please provide:
1. A current Alaska Registered Nurse License.
2. A current Drivers License.
3. A current CPR certification.
4. Proof of immunity or immunization records with the following: Tdap, MMR, Varicella, TB screening, annual influenza. (Hep B is also required but may be provided by the Section of Public Health Nursing, if not previously immunized).

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap),
Mumps, Measles, Rubella (MMR), and
Varicella.
If not available prior to employment, the following must be obtained upon employment:
Documentation of Hepatitis B immunity or a signed declination statement;
Annual influenza or a signed declination statement;
Tuberculosis screening is required upon beginning employment.
