JOB SUMMARY Under limited supervision, performs a variety of advanced patient care services in the examination and treatment of clients in in-patient and out-patient or clinic settings.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Performs Advanced Nurse Practitioner procedures, including dispensing and injecting medications and providing medical treatments. Reads and evaluates written information such as admission reports, physicians’ evaluation and diagnosis, and laboratory tests; evaluates problems and develops treatment plans.
Observes patients' conditions and behavior; records nursing notes on patient chart. Interviews patient and takes thorough patient history; reviews health records; performs physical exam; orders appropriate laboratory tests and other evaluation tools.
Formulates diagnosis, prescribes appropriate treatment, and develops a plan of care. ! Prescribes medications; monitors medication symptom-management! efficacy; evaluates and approves medication refill requests.
Supports and enhances the patients’ physical and emotional stability; explains nature of illness, plan of care, procedures and treatments to patients and family. Initiates nursing actions and provides comprehensive nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, social, and cultural needs of the patient.
Evaluates nursing care and revises plan of care to meet the individual patient needs. Confers and consults with supervising physician and Health Aides as needed; collaborates with other professionals to provide continued care outside the limitations of the clinic.
Develops and implements patient and family teaching program based on identified health care goals. Performs outreach services to educate residents on healthcare issues.
Updates and maintains a variety of files, records, charts and other documents. Maintains accurate patient records; charts documentation for administrative purposes and re! imbursement of services; records orders and progress notes in patient charts and maintains records in accordance with ANMC standards.
Gathers data for program management purposes; prepares reports as required. Provides technical guidance to other ANMC personnel; attends meetings as requested. Maintains a clean work environment including adequate supplies and upkeep of service unit and equipment. Provides feedback to the providers on quality of patient care delivered.
Performs other duties as assigned.
In the United States, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has resulted in high rates of liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma, liver-related death and/or liver transplantation. The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, Liver Disease and Hepatitis Program received funding for a Strategic Initiative which has its goal to increase HCV screening and treatment. Activities under this Strategic Initiative will be conducted for three years beginning October 1, 2013.
! Specific job duties of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner will include:
Clinical evaluation of persons with newly diagnosed and chronic hepatitis C. Expected time in clinic is 2-3 days/week.
Identifying appropriate hepatitis C treatment for each patient and implementing proper pre-treatment screenings before starting patient on treatment.
Implementing treatment and managing the care of the patient aon treatment to maximize successful treatment completion.
Follow up of patients who complete treatment for sustained virologic response (SVR) testing and continued evaluation of liver fibrosis in those persons with advanced liver disease.
Supervising RN who will be administering professional nursing care to patients as part of the strategic initiative.
Reporting to nurse practitioner supervisor on strategic initiative progress and any clinical issues.
Confer and consult with supervisor, physicians, other liver clinic staff to provide continuum of care to hepatitis C patients.
Participating in the development of hepa! titis C related education materials for patients and providers.
Travel to hub sites as needed for evaluation of persons with hepatitis C as part of the strategic initiative.
Gathering data related to strategic initiative and preparing reports as needed.
Performing advanced nurse practitioner representative duties as identified in job description.

Required Skills
Knowledge of modern nursing principles, techniques, and procedures for the care of patients. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and concepts of disease. Knowledge of professional protocols and practices in healthcare and patient treatment, case management, and physical and mental hygiene. Knowledge of the principles and practices of medical file and records management, and patient file documentation procedures. Knowledge of the general culture and needs of Alaska Natives and American Indians. Skill in evaluating health problems, and making recommendations based on observat! ions. Skill in providing effective nursing services, administering inje! ctions, assessing difficult situations and taking effective courses of action. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other ANMC employees. Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
Required Experience
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION A Master’s Degree in Nursing.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Non-supervisory â€" Eight (8) years of clinical care experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION Must be licensed as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner by the State of Alaska, and remain active with all annual licensing requirements. Advance certification(s) in area of specialty required.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas. W! ork involves the potential for exposure to infectious diseases. Some non-standard work hours are required.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. ANMC is not a latex free environment. Therefore, some latex exposure can be expected.
