Job Posting Summary

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is in the heart of the interior of Alaska. UAF attracts exceptional individuals, academic superstars, and adventure-seekers alike. With seven campuses across the state, our campuses house more than 11,000 students from all over the world. The Student Health and Counseling Center is an integral part of the University of Alaska Fairbanks' campus community. The Center provides primary health care, counseling, health education, substance abuse evaluation and student health insurance assistance. The Center seeks an energetic individual to join our professional counseling staff. This individual will participate in outreach events, counsel students, evaluate personal problems presented by students, interact with other campus departments, and provide training to staff and faculty. The Center hosts a practicum training program for 2nd-4th year PhD Psychology trainees. Clinical research is conducted at the Center! .

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.

Mastery of counseling theory and techniques, consultation skills, crisis intervention theory and techniques, and clinical record keeping; training and experience in development and effective presentation of outreach and prevention programs; thorough knowledge of current ethical principles, practices and standards of care for providing psychological services; human relations skills and knowledge of effective consultation methods; working knowledge of State of Alaska mental health and child/elder abuse Statutes.

Typical education or training required for this position (including licenses).

Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA approved program or Master's degree in a counseling related graduate program appropriate to work in a university counseling center. This advanced level of education and clinical experience is necessary for the counselor to make clinical! decisions regarding student welfare in an independent manner. State li! cense as a mental health provider is highly desirable.

Length of time and type of experience required for this position.

Typically, new employees in this position have a terminal degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology with a clinical internship and one or more years of experience at the time of employment. New doctoral degree recipients with a clinical internship and counselors with a Master's degree in a related field with clinical internship and several years of experience are also considered for employment in this position.

Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities for this position.

Experience in some specialized areas of counseling or mental health is helpful, e.g. training in alcohol intervention or experience with eating disorders.

Records

Duty:
Clinical Services

  • Evaluate personal problems presented by students- type of problem, level of seriousness, suicidality, etc.
  • Gather information on clinical history
  • Perform psychological testing as needed to assist in evaluation and treatment
  • Plan and carry out therapeutic counseling interventions on wide range of problems
  • Provide individual counseling and group counseling as appropriate
  • Create a written record of information gathered and services
  • Maintain confidentiality in accord with federal and state law and professional ethical standards
  • Write letters to students, parents, other service providers as needed to provide necessary care
Program Planning

  • Participate in general staff meeting to remain abreast of program ! plans and participate in future planning
  • Participate in counseling staff meeting regularly to develop and review program plans and activities
Consultation, Training and other General Professional Duties

  • Assist student/campus groups when they need mental health consultation and training
  • Communicate with staff and faculty on campus regarding student problems; provide guidance when crises occur
  • Train staff and faculty in dealing with student problems and student development when needed
Crisis Management

  • Meet with students, staff and faculty when crises occur on campus
  • Talk with students who are in a state of emotional or physical crisis
  • Carry out suicide prevention activities including hospitalization when necessary
  • Work with other departments (e.g. Residence Life, Police) and community agencies (e.g. Hospital, Women's Shelter)
Education and Outreach Relat! ed to Mental Health on Campus

  • Screen students for dep! ression, suicidality, alcohol use, etc. on a periodic basis
  • Write articles on mental health and mental illness topics for the student newspaper
  • Participate in campus wide and division wide activities related to our department and campus counseling services
  • Represent the Center and UAF as needed in community activities
  • Co-host weekly college radio show with mental health and outreach theme
