Job Posting Summary
The Institute of Circumpolar Health Studies (ICHS) (http://www.ichs.uaa.alaska.edu/) is a public health research institute within the College of Health at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), Dipolmacy Building. ICHS handles extensive confidential research and survey information, with substantive reporting and cooperative research with external cohorts and agencies. It has substantial statistical and survey software requirements for innovative information analysis. The focus of the Institute is research and policy development in public health and health systems. Prospective research foci are the social and physical determinants of Alaskan population health (including access to quality health care, addiction to alcohol, tobacco, and other substances, diet and nutrition, and global climate change). ICHS external agencies include AK DHSS, CDC, NIH and numerous private and public stakeholders in Alaska health issues. It also supports UAA aca! demic development with research discoveries.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.
Understanding of ESRI, SAS, SPSS, N*Vivo, Atlas or other software packages to analyze spatial, quantitative, or qualitative data, and ability to draft tables, charts, and reports describing these analyses are required. Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply written materials, policies, rules and regulations is required. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups and to work successfully as a mentor of a team, including planning and organizing work, as well as scheduling, directing and reviewing work of others is required. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to organize and present facts and opinions are required. Ability to analyze complex situations and make responsible decisions as well as exercise good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions is requir! ed. Advanced Internet research skills, excellent time management skills! , and strong attention to organization, detail and follow-through are required. Ability to work with discretion, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound independent judgment is required.
Typical education or training required for this position (including licenses).
Master's degree in social sciences, public health, public policy or a relevant field.
Length of time and type of experience required for this position.
At least four years of applied research experience beyond the bachelor's level in a social sciences, public health, public policy or relevant field is necessary.
Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities for this position.
Familiarity with Alaska health issues and data sources is preferred. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Account Principles (GAAP) and ability to create management reports using data gathered from various sources is preferred. Experience with basic office equipment, and extensive experience a! nd knowledge in using MS Office Professional Suite, especially Excel and Outlook, are preferred. Familiarity with UA policies, regulations and procedures, particularly in the areas of budget and finance, grants and contracts, HR, payroll and other cost center clerk duties are preferred.

Duty:
ICHS Leadership:
- Supervises departmental research staff when director is absent.
- Leads all-staff meetings.
- Debriefs Director on status of ICHS projects.
- Conducts surveys/studies relevant to organizational management.
- Supervises, hires, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.
- Works with assigned employees to correct deficiencies and recommends and implements corrective action.
- Monitors research technical staff progress on projects including tracking charges.
- Provides technical advice, problem-solving as! sistance, answers to questions regarding program goals, and policy interpretation.
- Participates in committees and task forces designed to improve the quality of service to co-workers.
- Completes reports related to recruitment, special programs, and professional development.
- Works with clients to define research questions and plan data collection and analysis.
- Works with research team to develop proposals and budgets.
- Monitors/maintains quality of proposals and budgets submitted by ICHS researchers.
- Conducts surveys/studies relevant to organizational managment.
- Manages and evaluates the coordination of ICHS projects.
- Works with research manager to monitor status of project budgets.
- Participates in training programs and professional development workshops and conferences.

- Assists the Director in preparing and monitoring departmental goals.
