Under general supervision, provides basic patient care to all patients ! by removing and repairing all types of casts and splints, including fiberglass and ability to reach cast care to patients.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Collaborates with other members of the health care team provide care to clients with orthopedic problems through the application, adjustment and removal of a variety of casts, splints, braces and traction fittings.
Performs casting services at ANMC hospital in dressing removal and assessing condition of wounds prior to cast applications. Cast application including specialized casts, fracture braces, body casts; using plaster or synthetic materials. Adjusts, removes, repairs, bivalves, wedges and windows casts measure to fit patients for orthopedic braces, devices and ambulatory aids.
Assists in the application, maintenance and adjustment of traction (skin, skeletal and manual). This includes patient education of traction therapy. Removes sutures, staples and pins related to external fixation. Fabricates an! d applies splints and bandages (ie., finger splints, velpeau b! andages, pressure dressings, humeral splints, knee splints, etc.) Instructs in the care of casts, splints or braces as well as skin care.
Reinforces the teaching of medical information given by the physician regarding specific injuries, treatment plans and anticipated results. Instruct patients regarding care and proper use. Orders and maintains equipment. Collaborates with other health care professionals such as physicians, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists to obtain the resources needed to assist in patient care. Consults with physicians for further orders when problems are identified.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills
Knowledge of safety factors.
Knowledge of orthopedic technology principles standards and applications.
Knowledge of policies and procedures for the care of patients
Knowledge of customer service concepts and practices.
Knowledge of communication skills, both oral! and written to interact with patients and families.
Knowledge of various endoscopy procedures & equipment (ie: EGD, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopies, Liver Biopsies, Bronchoscopies and Peg Tube Placements)
Skill in observing patients and taking appropriate action as needed.
Skill in analyzing safety issues and preparing recommendations based on findings.
Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications
Required Experience
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Non-supervisory â" Two (2) years professional work experience as an Orthopedic Technician. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Completion of Ortho! pedic Technician program and Orthopedic Technician Certification is req! uired. Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
May occasionally be exposed to hazardous conditions and infectious diseases. May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule. May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations. Work is performed in a standard office environment and in a study clinic setting.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds. ANMC is not a latex free environment. Therefore, some latex exposure can be expected.
