RNs are also eligible for many other positions within the Division of Public Health, such as Public Health Specialists, Health Program Managers, Health Practitioners and Medical Assistance Administrators.
Please note the minimum requirement for our Public Health Nurse positions require a BSN, however, many of ! our other nursing positions have allowable education and exper! ience substitutions for a BSN. Most of our rural nursing opportunities are Public Health Nurses. These nurses, are typically at the PHN III level and may work in a one or two-nurse clinic, may travel from a larger health clinic base to neighboring villages within a specific region or be a team leader in a public health center. PHNs serve as the front line public health workforce for communities across the state by delivering essential public health services from public health centers in 23 communities and through itinerant nurse visits to more than 175 towns and villages.
Their presence at the local level assures timely response to public health concerns and are the feet on the ground promoting and protecting the health and wellness of Alaska's communities. Our ideal PHNs are flexible, independent and critical thinkers, team players, good communicators and enthusiastic about providing high quality population-based public health services determined by ongoing commun! ity health assessments and statewide priorities. While we serve all Alaskans, we prioritize the most at risk, vulnerable and underserved populations. Current public health priorities are improving immunization rates, responding to the nationwide obesity problem, screening for and educating communities and individuals about domestic violence, reducing infectious diseases and supporting community capacity to respond and recover from emergencies.
