The Nurse Practitioner position is located in the Social and Behavior Health Services (S&BHS) at the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS). Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
Provide outpatient and residential care to patients who present with urgent/chronic medical condi! tions, change in mental status and/or functional decline.
Func! tion as an independent member of the Medical Staff with delineated clinical privileges granted by the Medical Executive Board.
Member of an interdisciplinary team providing primary care to patients and/or employees.
Assessment of risk factors, perform histories and physicals, order diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies, initiate consults and referrals.
Prescribe medications/supplies in accordance to VA policy, VA formulary and State regulations.
Seek consultation with physicians when cases are outside scope of practice.
Communicate relevant patient data in case presentations and medical records.
Formulate, initiate and evaluate health care teaching related to/for patients and families.
Facilitate communication related to patients with personnel responsible for their clinic services.
Act as consultation to nursing and medical staff.
Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.!

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship
English language proficiency (written and spoken)
Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
Registration - Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse and nurse practitioner in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA.
Certification - Certification as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
Educational requirements can be met as follows: Master's in Nursing from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agen! cy, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the ti! me the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Prescriptive Authority is required.
Experience: Experience will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following nine dimensions of nursing: practice, quality of care, performance, education/career development, collegiatlity, ethics, collaboration, research and resource utilization.
Preferred experience requirements:
Mental health experience.
